Marathon Training and Runna

I have recently started training for my latest marathon, the Buffalo Marathon, which will be Memorial Day weekend.  This will be marathon number 11 for me and over the years I have followed many training programs to get myself prepared (some with more success than others).

Usually with these programs, I just transfer the chart with prescribed workouts and paces into my calendar and make minor adjustments here and there and hope for the best with nothing more to go off of than my own input.

While there are many great run coaches out there, I am giving the app Runna a try this go around because I wanted to change it up but also had heard many good reviews.  Runna allows you to customize the type of program you want in many aspects:

  • How long do you want to train
  • How aggressive do you want to train
  • How much, if any, speedwork do you want included
  • How many days per week would you like to run
  • Do you want pace targets?  How often?
  • What is the minimum/maximum mileage you want to run per week, as well as per day.
I could keep going on.  This app is geared for novice runners looking to train for their first 5k, and seasoned marathoners (any anyone between).  You are able to put in current paces and goals and then Runna helps you determine a realistic target.

Runna then syncs up with my Garmin and feeds my workouts to me.  No need to program anything.

After the workout, and once the data from the run is synced back to the app, Runna provides feedback on the run or workout, and if necessary, recommends adjustments in pace or other metrics to help you succeed.

There is a huge FAQ section with sections on gear, shoes, injuries, etc.  Additionally, there are multiple forums where you can talk to others using the app or even training for your same race.

So at this point, I am impressed with the app as well as with my performances in the workouts.  Come race time, I'll know if it really helped me achieve my goal time.  As of now, at least I know it is holding me accountable.

Check out Runna!
